Chapter Three
It’s a sunny Saturday and its 9A.M in the morning, and I’m gaping at what seems to shock me now. What do you think it is? Its a mountain-like hill! Why, you wonder, am I gaping at the hill? Simply because I am to hike up the hill with four other club members to ‘Bond together’.
Allow me to explain. A few days ago Himitsu, a member of the Literature Club which I am in, decided that everyone should go on a ‘hiking up a hill’ trip. Obviously, I really looked forward to knowing each of them more, so I agreed. To think that this ‘hill’ would be so mountain-like! I bet there’re snakes inside! Ugh, the more I think about it the more I’m afraid of going in!
“Okay! LET’S GO IN PEOPLE!” Himitsu gave a war-cry and ran in first. For some reason, we all broke into a run after her. At first the slope up the hill was gentle, but as we climbed higher, the path started to get narrower and steeper. What was the time now? I looked at the watch and saw that it was already 12.30pm! Hey Himitsu, aren’t we gonna have lunch any time soon? My stomach is rumbling!
“OK! I think its alright to eat now, I bet you’re all hungry huh? Thank goodness my bentous are full of nutritious food to pep you all up! You guys better eat all okay?” Himitsu said cheerfully.
I opened up my bentou box and looked at it with anticipation and curiosity. What kind of food will I eat? To be honest I’ve never ate someone’s home-made bentou before… Oh! I gave a weak whimper of excitement. Eggs! With sausages, veggies, rice too!
“I brought Miso soup,” Naomi said quietly. Huh? When did I see Naomi bring that? Still, I’m now in the mood of appreciating food now. I tucked in heartily and ate most of the food.
“Ugh! No way I’m eating this gross stuff! Keep it back, Kaeda you idiot!” Kaito shouted at Kaeda, who was literally forcing Kaito to eat.
“Ugh, enough! I’m outta here! Kaeda you idiot!” Kaito shouted and ran upwards to the hill’s top.
Shocked, I said, “I’ll go after him!”
However, Kaeda, who usually was a cold person, was now wearing a very angry face. “No need,” He spoke even colder than usual. “He needs to learn. If he’s not going to eat, then if he starves its not my problem. Anyway, he’ll come back soon.”
Even though Kaito was that brat who played my friend, I didn’t think he should be going so high up the already-steep slope. Worried, I put down my bentou and raced up the slope. I, who used to be from the Track-and-Field team in my junior high school, could still run quickly. After all, I did win the Nationals for the 50 meters sprint for girls!
“Kaito! Kaito!” I shouted as I continued running up the slope. There might be snakes, my mind tried to tell me. I don’t care, I fought back. Why should I care? He’s not someone important to me, anyway! Even so, he’s important to Kaeda, to Himitsu, to Naomi even! I fought back even harder now. A few minutes later I started becoming tired. However tired I was, however, I still tried to continue going up. Suddenly, I heard cries for help.
“Help! Naomi! Kaeda! Himitsu!” Kaito’s voice rang out.
“Kaito, that you? Listen, its me, Miku! Are you injured in anyway?” I shouted towards that huge hole in the ground.
“Miku?” Kaito sounded astonished. “Yeah, I’m injured, I got a sprained ankle I think. I can’t get out! Mind calling out to the rest for me?”
“Umm, I’ll try!” I replied.
I started running down the steep slope, but in my haste, my foot tripped over a tree root and I fell into the hole and onto Kaito!
“Huh? WHY THE HELL DID YOU DROP IN?!” Kaito shouted in a flustered manner.
“Ah sorry!! I didn’t mean for that to happen, honestly!” I said apologetically.
Kaito sighed. “Seriously, there’s no space for the two of us!”
I blushed. Truth be told, when I look closely at Kaito, he really looked handsome. Even though his eyes were cold, I could see a small change in his emotions…
“You know, Miku? That day, when I said I liked you…” Kaito began.
I was alerted. What was he trying to say?
“Umm, I think its only right for me to apologize for making you angry because of my insensitive words. However, what I will not back out is that actually I do like you. I just… didn’t know how to act in front of you…” Kaito blushed as he continued, “And… I look just like a spoiled brat huh?”
“Yeah, you do look like one,” I replied.
“Ahh, sorry, I guess its time for me to become mature now,” Kaito mumbled.
“Not really,” I muttered. “You… You look cute like that…”
“What?” Kaito’s voice rang out, disbelieving what I said.
“Nothing!” I said, turning away from Kaito.
Just then, we heard the voices of the 3 remaining club members calling out for us.
“Oiiiii!! We’re HERE!!” The two of us shouted out to the rest.
A bunch of strange people pulled us out.
“We’re from the Fire Brigade… What the hell were you kids doing so high up? If you two need a lovey-dovey moment do it somewhere else, please!” One of the Fire Brigade people scolded us. Wait, so now we’re a couple?!
After this incident I thought that everything would be normal, but how wrong I was!
